First female beefeater allegedly harassed

By Sarah - Monday, November 30th, 2009

Back in 2007 the Tower of London had its first female beefeater in a 1000 year history with the appointment of Miss Cameron.  She qualified to be a Yeoman Warder after 22 years in the armed services but her appointment was a controversial one.  She claimed at the time that not everyone was supportive of her appointment when she started work at the Tower with her 34 male colleagues.

Now two male beefeaters have been dismissed after an investigation into a bullying campaign against her.  One of those dismissed has been talking to the papers and says his life has been ruined by the allegations, as he has lost his annual salary and reduced rent home at the Tower of London.  The allegation was that he swore more in her presence, avoided her and generally acted as a ring leader when it came to her unfair treatment.  He says he has been dismissed because “he is a man and because of political correctness”.

Returning after maternity leave

By Sarah - Monday, November 30th, 2009

According to a survey by the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) 40% of women say that they find returning to work after maternity leave difficult or very difficult.  33% said that their relationship with their boss had deteriorated since they became pregnant and that their promotion prospects had been reduced since having a baby.  The survey polled over 1500 mothers who had just returned to work after maternity leave.  Around 1 in 7 women return to work in a less senior position than when they left and 88% want to work flexibly when they return to work.

Despite the wave of equality legislation over recent years the NCT claims women are still not getting the suppport they need when they return to work.  In my view this is not reflected everywhere and the Government should re-look at the Keeping in Touch (KIT) days.  10 is nowhere near enough KIT days especially if women wish to take off 9-12 months from a senior position.  This can be exhausted in a matter of weeks given the rule that any work on any day counts as a whole day! Surely a pro-rata’d amount for the absence would be better rather than a one size fits all policy!

This article reports that the banks have won the battle in the Supreme Court about the fairness of bank charges such as late payment and unauthorised overdraft fees. However it looks like the banks may not have won the war - the Court indicated there may be other grounds on which to challenge the charges.

Advertising jobs ….

By Olivia - Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

A quick reminder of a change to take effect as from 14 December.  Before jobs can be offered to non EEA workers they must have been advertised for two weeks (or one week if salary is £40,000 or more).  For advertising campaigns starting on or after 14 December this will be extended to four weeks.  The four week period will not need to run continuously and employers who have already run ads will not need to re-advertise to meet the new requirement.

Norfolk has more talent!

By Practice Administration Team - Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I did a blog a while ago on a young artist, Kieron Williamson, from Holt in Norfolk.  Now this man has come to light and he lives a stone’s throw from Kieron in Briston. His talent is even more exceptional  as he is a thalidomide victim and has no arms, using just his right foot to do all his painting.   North Norfolk is clearly a very special part of the world producing some fine people!!!.
