A leading barrister will go to court next week to stop his ex-wife claiming £560,000 from him – nearly 30 years after they separated.
She wants a £560,000 lump sum from her ex-husband David Vaughan QC, who enjoys a millionaire lifestyle with his second wife and two children.
Up until last year, Mr Vaughan had been paying his ex-wife a total of just over £27,000 a year in maintenance and periodical payments.
However, more than 40 years after their wedding, Deputy High Court Judge Richard Anelay QC last year not only rejected Mrs Vaughan’s plea for a £560,000 lump sum, but ordered the immediate termination of her periodical payments.
May be she should not of been so greedy! Read the full story here

A report undertaken by Pricewaterhouse Coopers has suggested that the government’s plans to increase the default retirement age to 66 by 2026, 67 by 2036 and 68 by 2046 does not go far enough. The report identified that changes were needed to fund higher state pensions, reduce public debt and reflect trends in population such as living longer.
It suggested that a higher state pension age would enable a more generous state pension in the future and would not add burden to the public debt and taxation of workers.

A European Parliamentary Committee has passed draft legislation to extend maternity leave to 20 weeks on full pay (currently in the UK women are given a year off with the first 6 weeks on 90% pay followed by 33 weeks on statutory maternity pay of £123 a week). The new proposals would effectively treble maternity pay in the UK.
If this eventually becomes law then this could be a huge financial burden for businesses. Whilst I am all for generous benefits there has to be a balance struck between rights and entitlements of the individual and the impact on businesses. I remain unconvinced this proposal has struck that balance.

A former assistant manager of a London pub has won his claim for discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation before the London Central Employment Tribunal for an undisclosed sum. The manager was gay and the pub in Earl’s Court was taken over by new ownership in December 2008.
The new owners wanted to “de-gay” the pub from its current clientele to a mixed sexuality gastro pub. Gay staff members and customers were termed queens by management. The assistant manager was asked to reprimand a gay couple for their behaviour and was told that he was “another kind of gay”. He was also asked to hang a sign outside stating that the pub “was not a guy pub”.
The manager resigned in January 2009 and it took him nine months to secure alternative employment as he suffered depression, sleeplessness and had counselling. The Evening Telgraph ran the story last night.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has discovered that less than 6 months after the introduction of European guidelines, to reduce junior doctors working hours to 48 hours per week, hospitals are struggling to cope.
A survey of 1,500 junior doctors found that 6 out of 10 are often forced to work in casualty departments where the levels are staff are insufficient. In fact they are expected to cover shifts that should be filled by specialist trainees with a minimum of 5 years experience.
The BMA claim that the levels of under-staffing are placing people’s lives at risk.

Those of you who know me will know that I am not a big lover of sport in any way shape or form. However, that has now changed with the discovery of Ski Cross! I watched this on Sunday whilst channel hopping and am now hooked. Apart from the sport itself there are some wonderful names to conjure with … Filip Flisar being one!
If you have not yet watched this event take five minutes to watch the clip below and I bet you will be hooked!!

According to a new survey women make three times as much tea/coffee for workmates than men. According to the survey when men do make the tea they make bigger rounds by one cup and rectruitment consultants are the biggest tea drinkers apart from our Liam. 44% admitted to making bad tea/coffee in an attempt to avoid being asked again and builders are the least likely to complain about bad tea.
40% of arguments are over the fact that workers only make themselves a cuppa and not colleagues. Is labelling this sexual inequality a step too far? Unsuprisingly those behind the drink production are calling for workplaces to make it fairer as to who makes the tea or is this just an attempt to get us to drink more!
Rows are brewing everywhere over who should make the hot drinks but is it all a storm in a tea cup…..
