Affirmation

When witnesses give evidence in Tribunal they are asked if they want to take the oath, if so on which holy text or whether they want to affirm.  An affirmation is a solemn promise that you will tell the truth and is usually used when a witness is not religious.  An affirmation has exactly the same legal meaning as an oath.
