PJH’s blog is now one year old and what a year of developments it has been. Feedback has been positive and clients seem to prefer a snapshot rather than a bi-monthly newsletter. We have moved the site onto our newly developed website which contains a lot more information accessible to all.
We have reported on many changes in the law from maternity regs to holiday and reviewed many decisions made by the EAT and above. We have on the whole been able to comment and predict with some accuracy the likely outcome of the potential challenges making the news. One example is the Freshfields age discrimination case and our prediction that it would not be successful.
Watch this space for more news, updates and developments in the field of employment law. Like the baby pictured we are sure there will be more developments and milestones ahead.

Today Tanya, the firm’s Administrative Assistant, will be leaving for pastures new. She has been job sharing with Linda, Practice Manager, whilst doing a AAT Course in Accounting at a local College in the mornings. She has now secured a position at a local accountants pursuing her chosen career. So it is goodbye (do-svidanya) to Tanya and we all wish her well in her future career.
Many of you may remember the smiling newcomer to the firm, many months ago who is unrecognisable to the Tanya we see today. Tanya always has a smile on her face, which will be sorely missed by the team.
So watch this space for news on a new face at PJH Law who will be joining the team in September.

As promised some photos from Thursday night. First up, we have Philip Hyland making his speech.
Second up it is either a picture from Gamblers anonymous or those guests taking the prize winning very seriously!
Last up, you could be mistaken for thinking it is an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting but no it’s just some party goers enjoying the champagne and wine!

Last night’s birthday party went with a bang! Watch this space for photos of the night. We were truly honoured by the number of people who accepted our invitation and attended the event.
Everybody looked fantastic in their formal wear and the casino (although not making any millionaires) went down well. Prizes were awarded including missile launchers (of the USB kind), an aston martin (of the replica kind) and a real spa pamper break for two.
Philip gave a speech, Liam was official photographer and Sarah even pulled, a pint that is! We were especially honoured by the guest who cut his break in South Africa short to be back for our party and the guest who brought champagne and chocolates. Whilst we are all suffering today - it was a night to remember (well at least for those that can!)
A big thank you to everyone and especially to Sanda and Valter of the Fox and Hounds in Exton for their fantastic buffet and hospitality. See the venue here.

PJH Law is 5 years old today. One of Linda’s duties, as well as practice management, is now baking birthday cakes. Philip Hyland is pictured with the Firm’s birthday cake. I can personally confirm that the cake tastes as good as it looks!Amongst other things, the Firm’s birthday is marked with a new website and updated branding (notice this blog has improved its appearance, so as well as providing a wealth of useful information it also loooks good too). Also notice the firm’s rebranded brochures to the left of the photo.

One of my new year resolutions this year was to read more. One of the books I have recently read is Fooled by Randomness by Nasseem Taleb. The author was (and is) a highly succesful options trader. In essence he recognises that there is a high degree of chance in his work, luck is very important. He is succesful at options trading because he recognises that most traders under estimate the role of luck. His strategy is therefore to trade options that are under water, ie highly unlikely to hit the strike price by the time of expiry. His strategy is to lose small amounts regularly, but to win big when an underwater option comes to life. He then extrapolates this strategy into a book, the premise of which is that much of life is governed by luck and chance, which we should recognise and accept.
The book invites the reader to look back at key events in their life (in my case meeting a partner, having children, starting a business, winning or losing a big case) and see which of the key events were managed and planned and which just happened by chance. In short the book illustrates John Lennon’s famous saying that “life is what happens when you are busy making plans.”
To illustrate the role of chance, at PJH law we decided to have a re-brand and update our publicity and website. We chose 4 firms to come in and pitch for the business. After the first pitch Sarah said we should ask a fifth firm in to pitch. We struggled to come up with anyone and then Sarah remembered the name of a firm,Titman Firth, that was based in Peterborough that she had done work for in the past. She had no knowledge of their work. They were very much a late entry but secured the bid to do the work. They were invited in, purely by chance, as Sarah thought that 5 was a good number. I was in favour of 3 tenderers, and 4 had been a compromise.
The fact that Titman Firth were invited in, over anyone else, was a random event, a chance remark leading to Sarah dragging up the name from the deep recess of her memory. Their selection, however, was based on merit.
If you have managed to get to the end of the post, well done, and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Gary and Leigh for their magnificent work on the re-brand. I can highly reccommend Titman Firth for succesfully combining the ying of Leigh’s artistic and design flair with the yang of Gary’s technical IT geekery. In the web 2 era, a business needs that combination.
