Changes to Flexible Working Stay in Queen’s Speech

by Emma

Following on from Jenny’s earlier blog about the Queen’s speech you may be interested to know that the proposed changes to flexible working making the right to request it available to parents of older children were, after all, in the slimline speech.  We reported here that they might be pulled because of the possible impact on businesses in these difficult times.  I was glad to hear Peter Mandelson on the Today Programme this morning saying that having thought “carefully” (and I might be wrong but I think he said “carefully” more than once) about the impact of the changes they should stay.  He made the point I made in the previous blog which is it is only the right to request flexible working and businesses can refuse the request on various grounds.  Perhaps he read my blog (or the current legislation)!

It has also been confirmed by the Employment Relations Minister, Pat McFadden, that the changes will be implemented in April 2009. The extension will enable parents with children up to the age of 16 to request flexible working in the workplace.  It is believed that employee flexibility will have a knock on effect and assist businesses profitability.
