Disaster Recovery in action

Last month’s floods were devastating for many families and particularly in the North of England, but the effects on businesses in the area were also catastophic. Suprisingly HR has a role to play in the disaster recovery for a business. It is important that businesses have a disaster recovery plan in place should they ever need it. As a firm it is one of our standard requirements to achieve our quality standard Lexcel but thankfully it has not been called into operation.
We have heard reports of the floods, in Sheffield in particular, engulfing whole floors of businesses in its wake. HR Managers having to spring into action to ensure the well-being of the staff they are responsible for. In some cases (very extreme) having to ensure everybody gets on the roof as the only place of safety and making sure staff are accounted for. HR also had a role to play in ensuring staff were told whether or not the offices were going to open the next day and if not what the alternative arrangements would be. In some cases leaving work was impossible and provisions for a long night had to be made.
Apparently, the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce had to direct 100% of its efforts into disaster recovery to assist businesses after the floods. So in light of the misfortune of others, now is a good time to carry out the Scout moto and “Be prepared” by ensuring that you have a disaster recovery plan in place.
You never know when you may need it and having a plan B may protect your business against further losses and ensure your employees still have a job to go to/do.
