Lee Evans

by Jenny

I am off to see Lee Evans tomorrow night at the National Indoor Arena which I am really looking forward to. I went to see him at the Glee Club in Birmingham back in February and have to say he was brilliant. He was trying out new material and it was refreshing to see that not everything that comedians come out with works first time. I particular remember a certain post office joke that left the room silent! Even with the odd stinker I still spent  most of the time laughing my head off.

Unfortunately I have to say though that there was lady in front of me who did not enjoy the other acts who came on before Lee (who I personally thought were almost on a par with Lee for funniness). She spent most the time moaning to her friend about the ‘controversial’ content of the jokes. At the time I felt like tapping on her shoulder and telling her not to worry because I am sure that it will only be a matter of time before policitical correctness finds its way into stand up comedy and then we can all listen to jokes about post office queues and licking stamps (sorry Lee, but that was a bad one). Obviously Lee’s stand up was a bit more tame probably because he has a wider audience to please.

I’m sure we remember the case concerning a certain comedian who liked to, shall we say, make jokes not to everybody’s taste (particularly the waitresses). I do agree that someone should not be forced to stay and listen to something they find offensive (e.g in the course of their employment). I’m sure though that it won’t be long before someone who has actually bought a ticket will want compensation because they have been ‘traumatised’ and there wasn’t a ‘warning’ on the ticket. Why spoil it for people and sit there moaning? Just leave so I can see the stage better.

I am sure Lee will be just as funny this time round but will let you know!

  1. Look forward to your review, Jenny. If Lee’s comedy career ever stalls, he’s tailor made for the part of the hunchback of notre dame. Or am I being too cruel?
