Paternity rights

by Sarah

This morning rather aptly whilst knee high in baby paraphernalia, there was a breakfast news story about paternity leave.  The Equality and Human Rights Commission is calling for improved rights for fathers to participate in caring for their child.  A recent report showed that 45% of fathers do not take the two weeks they are entitled to as they cannot afford to do so and 40% don’t because they are worried about their career as they feel their commitment to the job would be questioned or it would ruin their chances of promotion.

The EHRC propose that fathers be entitled to the same two weeks as present but at 90% of their pay.  A further 4 months dedicated parental leave with at least 8 week’s being at 90% of pay followed by another 4 months parental leave, which could be taken by either parent again with 8 week’s at 90% pay.

Having just gone through this process in our family, the two week’s goes so quickly especially if the birth does not go to plan and a further week would be great for all concerned.  However, this is unlikely to be passed given the proposed general election as it would not be popular with businesses in the current climate.
