Raise the minimum wage?

by Jenny

The TUC has apparently called for the minimum wage to be increased to £6.10 next October. Worries are that the Low Pay Commission who set the minimum wage may not want to increase it much next year because of the recession and increased unemployment.

It is believed that increasing the wages of the very low paid will increase spending power and give that all important boost to the economy in a time of recession.

The current minimum wage is £5.73 for workers aged 22 years and above, £4.77 per hour for workers aged 18-21 (inclusive) and workers under 18 years of age and no longer of compulsory school age receive the rate of £3.53 per hour.

Approximately one million workers were affected by the increase last October.
