Religious discrimination claim at Tesco

by Jenny

It has been reported that Tesco is being sued by a former employee for discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief. Mr Ahmed, who is originally from Saudi Arabia, and is a muslim, is suing Tesco because he was required to handle alcohol as part of his job as a fork lift truck driver.

Mr Ahmed alleges that he did not know that the job would involve handling alcohol when he applied. Tesco say that it was reasonble for him to have known what Tesco do and that he was advised at the outset what the job would entail. Mr Ahmed is also alleging that he was victimised and harrassed after he raised a grievance about it.

The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 came into force on 2 December 2003 and made it unlawful to discriminate against employees or prospective employees on the grounds of religion or belief.
