Unusual business expenses……

by Philip

At PJH law we take the view that when employees are out on firm business they can take and use the firm credit card to pay for train fares and parking. This saves administration time and eases cash flow as the solicitor does not have to pay the expenses out of their own pocket and wait for re-imbursement.

I was a bit shocked to read that a relatively well known law firm equipped its associate Solicitors with  credit cards with a firm logo which were then used, while apparently a partner was present on the night out, for entry to a strip club.

Not only that the associate Solicitor took a work placement student to said strip club and then proceeded to ply her with lewd suggestions whilst there, despite the fact that the student had made her discomfort known.

Needless to say the associate Solicitor was sacked. Employers need to realise that following the Stubbs v Lincolnshire Police case the ambit of sexual harassment cases extends to out of work activities that are part and parcel of the job. Presumably the firm in sacking the associate are implicitly admitting that visits to strip clubs are part of your job….indignity at work indeed.
