E-learning FAQ

What is E-learning?

E-Learning (electronic learning) is a broad term used to describe learning and training programmes where technology is used in delivery. It is typically used to describe CD-ROMs, the Internet, Intranets, and wireless or mobile learning.

What are the benefits of using e-learning?

Learners can access e-learning at any time and at any location with a pc and internet connection – some courses can even be run on a pda mobile phone or pda. Travel to training venues is no longer required, saving time, money and the environment. E-Learning can quickly deliver a message to a large number of employees, meaning you have speedy access to the latest information and learning resources. You can refer back to the content at any time during the currency of your license (normally one year).

I’ve never done online learning before. How does it work?

From the learner’s perspective, courses are completed by employees who use a computer with a web browser and internet connection to log on to the course using a unique user name and password. Many courses allow the user to print off a certificate after successfully completing the course.

From the Company’s perspective, the Company purchases licenses for an agreed number of employees to complete a course or courses. The courses are loaded on to a Learner Management System (LMS) and completed by employees as described above. The Company’s training department, HR department or any other designated person can monitor employees’ progress through the course through the LMS.

What is SCORM?

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It is a collection of specifications that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of web-based learning content. In English, it is the main industry standard for e-learning courses. The third party courses offered by PJH Law meet the SCORM specification which means data generated by learners using the course can be output to, and managed by, any SCORM compliant Learner Management System (LMS). If your LMS is SCORM compliant and you wish to use Dignity at Work please call us to discuss your exact requirements.

What is a Learner Management System?

A Learner Management System or LMS is a tool that manages multiple courses being undertaken by multiple learners. The LMS will track each learner’s progress through each course and is essential for compliance purposes to show that training has been undertaken. The LMS will show the answers that learners have entered for exams or tests within courses and show whether they have passed the test. There are also numerous other uses for LMS outside of e-learning.

Where can I get an LMS?

Some enterprise management systems such as SAP incorporate an LMS module. If you do not have an LMS at the moment, do not worry! PJH Law can provide a customised LMS tailored to your precise requirements. Unlike many LMS providers, our system is priced as a flat fee per learner per year for an unlimited number of courses. Our LMS can be used to manage not only the PJH Law range of courses, but courses from independent providers as well! We do not lock our LMS to prevent the use of independent courses!

How soon can I get it?

This varies depending on precisely what course you require, whether you have an existing LMS and what level of customisation is required. Time scales range from a day or two upwards. We will discuss your requirements with you and will always endeavour to work within your desired timescales.

Does it matter how big the company is?

If you already have an LMS in place, or do not require course tracking and management functionality, courses can be provided in any quantity from one learner upwards. In our experience it is cost effective to implement an LMS and course licenses for anything upwards of 25 learners.

Are courses available on CD?

Some courses are available on CD, but courses supplied in this format do not benefit from the tracking and management functions available when sitting the course online through an LMS.

What are the minimum hardware and software requirements for taking courses?

A computer running a web browser and internet connection are required to access courses through a LMS. Broadband internet is recommended, although not strictly essential. Any PC built in the last 6 years should have no problems. A LMS is strongly recommended, although not strictly essential for all courses.

How long will the course take to complete?

A key benefit of e-learning is that learners can learn at their own pace. The time taken to complete courses will vary significantly. An approximate time for completion is shown with each course.

How can I make the payment?

Once your order has been placed by telephone, we will invoice you. Payment can then be made by BACS or cheque.

Who can I contact if I am unable to get it to work?

Contact us on 0870 350 5805.

Will I achieve a certificate once I have completed the course?

Many courses offer this facility. Progress through all courses can be tracked through the LMS.

Will a modem connection be sufficient for e-learning?

Yes. Although we recommend using a faster connection if available to you, using a modem is possible.

Can I run more than one course from the same computer?

Yes. Once the course has been purchased and loaded on to the LMS, learning can be undertaken at any time of the day or night, either continuously or in shorter sessions to suit each individual learner. E-learning recognises that everyone is different and offers a high degree of flexibility to accommodate this.

Can I run more than one course from the same computer?

Yes. Each learner has their own unique username and password to access courses through their LMS. One computer can therefore handle several learners doing several courses each (although obviously only one learner at a time!).

Can I preview an e-learning course?

Yes. Either call us, or complete the following form to request a preview
